Amiodarone
Amiodarone is an anti-arrhythmic drug marketed as brand names Cordarone
and Pacerone. It is used
in the treatment of heart rhythm disorders such as atrial fibrillation.
The drug, although effective to suppress ventricular and
supraventricular tachyarrhythmias, has been linked to several severe
side effects such as blindness and pulmonary toxicity. The problems are
exacerbated by the drugs extremely long half life.
Pulmonary toxicty is a potentially life threatening condition. Between
five and fifteen percent of all
patients on Amiodarone suffer from pulmonary toxicity. Acute Pulmonary
Toxicity is difficult to recognize. It is often diagnosed as lung
inflammation or heart failure. Although difficult to diagnose, patients
on Amiodarone who suffer from bronchospasm, excessive coughing,
dyspnea, respiratory failure, or fever should contact a physician
immediately. The FDA has recognized the dangers and now requires
patients to receive a FDA approved warning guide when taking this drug.
